James G. Baker

M, b. March 1837
     James G. Baker was born in March 1837 at Norway.1 He was began clerking in Kongsberg, Norway in 1856. He emigrated on 23 April 1859; sailed for America.1 He arrived in the town of Black Earch, Dane County, Wisconsin where he spent the summer on 8 June 1859.1 He came to Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin and attended school during that winter circa September 1859.1 He was Spring of 1860 he began merchandising which he continued for about ten months in 1860.1 He went into farming in the town of Dunkirk until 1864.1 He married Adeline Nelson in 1861.1 James G. Baker returned to village and engaged in mercantile trade until 1867 when he sold to N. Anderson & Co.1 He appointed agent for the Merchants' Union Express Company and he was also the agent for the American a short time in 1866.1 He married Caroline E. Chidester, daughter of Jerome C. Chidester and Larise Jane Clark, on 23 November 1868 at at the home of bride's father, Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin.1,2,3 James G. Baker became the agent for U.S. Express Company in 1869. He was book-keeper for Johnson & Melaas, clothiers in Stoughton in 1876.1 He and Caroline E. Chidester lived in 1880 at Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin.1
