THE HUNGERFORD CLAN

This history was written by Gilbert Doane of the University of Wisconsin at Madison dated August 12, 1933. It was sent to me as an early record of the Hungerford Family recorded by Mr. Doane while on a trip in England.

THE ENGLISH RECORD

My Dear Mrs. Benson:

I was very glad to have your communication of August 2nd. Both Mrs. Doane and I very much regret that we cannot come to the Hungerford reunion a week from tomorrow. It is just a little too far to drive in one day.

I was also glad to have your record of the children of Bele and Fannie (Gobel) Hungerford. Mr. William Bele Hungerford of Manly, Iowa, had given me some of the data, but not quite as complete as that you sent. The information that your Grandfather was a seventh son will help to identify him, I think.

Thus far I have records of the decendents of your Uncles James and Gideon, and I would like to get the records of the children of Barney. (What was his full name? Barney Diadate Hungerford?)

It may interest you all to know I was in England last summer for three months. I was trying to find the English ancestry of Thomas Hungerford, the emmigrant, who settlet in Connecticut in 1639. I am quite sure that your Grandfather Bele descended from him, as all the Hungerfords in New England and New York are in some way descended from him. I found no definite proff of any conncection between Thomas Hungerford, the emmigrant and the English family, but I got one small clue which I hope to follow up the next time I go over.

For seven weeks I laid in London and worked daily at the British Museum where I discovered three manuscripts (that is unprinted), histories of the Family of Hungerford in England and Ireland. I spent mos the the time going over that record line for line and word by word hoping always to find mention of a Thomas Hungerford who "went beyound the Seas" of "to New England"; But alas, no luck. I did find, however, that there was a Thomas Hungerford who lived in Chelsea, now a suburb of London, and died there about 1585. He had two sons, Edmund and John, but the manuscript said no more about them except that Edmund lived at one time in Speke Berkshire. The next time I am in England (I am afraid it will be many years from now) I want to go to Speke and examine the Parish records there to see if Edmund had any children. I have a hunch that our Thomas was his son, but I must find documentary evidence before I can definitely say that he was.

As you probably know, the Hungerford family was at one time very prominent in England and in English affairs. Sir Thomas Hungerford, who died December 3, 1397, was speaker of the House of Commons. His son, Sir Walter, was created in 1425 Lord Hungerford. The present holder of the title is Countess of London who is also Baroness Hungerford.

In 1536, another Sir Walter Hungerford, descended from a younger son of the first Lord Hungerford, was created Lord Hungerford of Hoytesbury to distinguish him from the them Lord Hungerford of the earlier creation. This new Lord Hungerford of Hoytesbury was a very notorious man and was finally beheaded in London in 1540, and his title was forfeited. Because of his crimes, no moer of his descendants were allowed to use the title. The family became rich and powerful as the two creations of peerages indicated, but like many families, weakened after a few generations and petered out in England until today there is no one of the surname living in England, although there is a Sir William Hungerford, a descendant of the Irish branch of the family living in Ireland. This Irish Branch of the family also has descendants living in Chicago at the present time.

Three Hungerfords came to America before 1645. Our Thomas,(as we call him), who settlet in Connecticut, another Thomas who settled in Maryland and had very few descendantss, and a William who settled in Maryland and became the ancestor of the Hungerfords of Virginia, who married with the Washington Family and were related to the first President.

Our Thomas Hungerford was in Hartford, Connecticut, by 1639 and is supposed to have lived there until about 1650 when he moved to Now London, Conn. He dies in New London in 1663. He was twice married but we know nothing of his first wife except that she was the mother of his only son. His second wife was Hannah Willey, daughter of Isaac Willey of New London. By her ha had a daughter, Hannah who married William Ross of Rhode Island.

The only son of Thomas Hungerford the first, wal (was) also names (named) Thomas Hungerford Jr. and married a woman named Mary. She is said to have been a Green or Gray of perhaps Graves. The only thing that we know which points to her surname is the fact that they had a son named Greene Hungerford. This Thomas Hungerford Jr. Had a large family, and from him came all the Hungerfords of New England and New York, also practically all of those who now live here in the Midwest.

My own Hungerford ancestor was a Samuel Hungerford, who was son of Thomas Hungerford the fourth. This Thomas Hungerford was son of Thomas Hungerford the third and grandson of Thomas Hungerford Jr. Mentioned above. Samuel Hungerford lived in New Fairfield, Conn., but was the original grantee of three township in Northern Vermont. He, himself, never went to Vermont, but deeded some of this land to his daughter Eunice and her husband Joseph Soule. My Grandfather Gilbert (my Mother's Father) was a grandson of the eldest daughter of Joseph Soule and Eunice Hungerford, so you see I have a double line of descent from Samuel Hungerford the grantee.

During the last three of four years I have collected data about some 500 families of Hungerfords in America; almost all of these (except about twenty-six) are descendants of Thomas Hungerford of Connecticut. They are scattered from California to Alabama, from New Hampshire to Washington, and appear in most of the states between. Some of them are living in Canada where Mr. Samuel J. Hungerford, acting President of th Canadian National Railways lives. He is also a descendant of this Samuel Hungerford the grantee.

So you see, it is an interesting family and a very fine family. Many descendants have sent me lots of data and many never have neglecte(d) to answer my letters to them. I do not like to thin(k) that the others are not interested in the history of the family but prefer to feel that they have just put off visiting me or have mislaid my letters to them. One very old lady in Ohio bundled up all her family papers and sent them all to me to copy. There was a shoe box full ofthem but I copied them all and sent them back to her. Another woman in Burlington, Iowa sent me all he deceased husband's papers and from them I gained a lot of data and information. They, too, were copied and sent back. One charming old lady, over eighty, from New York state, wrote me that her husband was born in Wilshsire England within sight of Hungerford Castle. He came to America as a young man, met this Jennie Hungerford and married her. It is a funny coincidence that he should have known as a boy the ancient home of the Hungerford Family. It is now owned by strangers and has seen many vicisitudes. The original castle is now an ivy covered ruin, although the little chapel is preserved, and in it the remains of a dozen or so of the family, all of who died some 500 years ago, are still resting.

GILBERT A. DOANE

A further letter from Mr. Doane dated June 25, 1940, from Madison, Wis. He is director of the Library of the University of Wisconsin, 816 State Street, Madison, Wisconsin.

"During the past year I have accomplished very little on the Hungerford Genealogy. In fact for three years I have been very busy with my new job at Wisconsin and haven't had time to enter into the correspondence which the compiliation of a genealogy involves. Occasionally I have seized the opportunity to communicate with some members of the family from whom I hadn't heard before. I spent the equivalent of a couple days searching the vital records of Wisconsin at the State Capital. Incidentally, I have found the records of your branch of the family during their residence in this state, and they checked with those which you sent me six or seven years ago and added almost nothing to them. I am still always eager to get new Hungerford data and if any of you have succeeded in determining the parentage of Bele Hungerford, I should be happy to know about it.

There are Hungerfords living her(e) in Madison but they belong to another brand of the family, although they are in reality distant cousins. One of them was drowned in the Phillipines two years ago while trying to save the life of a fellow Marine. His family has received from the government a formal citation of his bravery. From the pictures which appeared in the paper at the time of his death, I gathered that he was a very find young man.

One of the most interesting records which I have ever had regarding the Hungerford family came to me only a few days ago from Michigan. A Mr. And Mrs. Hungerford there have been married thirty-three years and have had 21 children of which 19 are living. There are only two pairs of twins in the lot. A picture of the entire family indicates that they are fine looking people. The freind who interviewed the father for me tells me that she was very much impressed by him.

With best regard to you all and again my regret that we cannot be at the reunion this year.
Sincerely yours,
GILBERT H. DOANE
